FAQ
Questions About Planning a Finnish Sauna
From room planning and heater sizing to ventilation, electrical requirements, materials, and löyly, these are the questions we are most often asked when planning residential and commercial saunas in the Philippines.
01 — Planning
Planning Your Sauna
What makes The Finnish Sauna Company authentically Finnish?
The company is built on Finnish sauna culture and practical sauna-building experience, with Finnish roots that include Tampere, known since 2018 as the Sauna Capital of the World. Between them, our Finnish team has built well over 500 saunas in the Philippines. We start from Finnish sauna culture and its technical principles rather than treating a sauna as a generic wellness room, then adapt those principles to Philippine architecture, climate, electrical supply and project conditions.
Is Finnish sauna culture recognized by UNESCO?
Yes. Sauna culture in Finland was inscribed in 2020 on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The inscription recognizes the living sauna culture and traditions of Finland; it is not an endorsement or certification of individual sauna companies.
How early should I involve The Finnish Sauna Company in a project?
As early as possible. For new construction or major renovations, early coordination lets us plan room proportions, bench levels, ventilation, electrical requirements, drainage, door locations, and adjacent finishes before these become costly to change.
Can you work with our architect or interior designer?
Yes. We can develop the sauna together with the project architect, interior designer, contractor, or MEP team. We provide the sauna-specific planning for the room, equipment, ventilation, electrical requirements, materials, and installation details.
Can you build a sauna inside an existing room?
Often, yes. We first assess the room dimensions, ceiling height, access, existing construction, electrical capacity, ventilation possibilities, drainage, and whether the space can be properly insulated and detailed for sauna use.
Can you build an outdoor sauna in the Philippines?
Yes. Outdoor saunas need additional attention to weather protection, roof and wall build-up, drainage, exterior materials, ventilation, moisture, and the tropical environment. The design depends on the site and whether the sauna is freestanding or integrated into another structure.
Do you handle both residential and commercial projects?
Yes. We design and build private residential saunas as well as saunas for hotels, resorts, spas, gyms, clubs, and other wellness environments.
Do you work outside Metro Manila?
Yes. We are available for projects across the Philippines, subject to site conditions, logistics and project scope.
How much does a Finnish sauna cost in the Philippines?
There is no useful one-size-fits-all price for a custom sauna. Cost depends on room size, timber and glazing, heater and controls, lighting, ventilation and electrical requirements, site conditions, location, and how much of the construction is included in our scope. Once we have basic dimensions or plans, we can give more meaningful budget direction for the project.
02 — Design
Design & Technical Planning
What makes a Finnish sauna different from just a hot room?
Room proportions, heater output, stone capacity, bench levels, ventilation, materials and löyly all contribute to how a sauna feels. Temperature alone does not decide the quality of the experience.
How do you determine the correct sauna size and bench layout?
We start with the intended number of users, room dimensions, ceiling height, heater position, circulation, and how the sauna will be used. Bench levels and clearances are then designed around the heated bathing zone, safe distances, and the selected heater.
Why is ventilation important in a sauna?
Ventilation brings in fresh air, removes stale and humid air, and helps the sauna feel comfortable while it is being used. The correct locations for supply and exhaust depend on whether ventilation is mechanical or gravity-based, the heater, room layout, and the manufacturer's requirements. It is one of the most commonly overlooked parts of sauna design, so we plan it as part of the sauna rather than adding it afterwards.
Does a sauna need a floor drain?
A floor drain is recommended where practical because sauna use involves water and the room needs to be cleaned. The final drainage approach depends on the room, surrounding wet-area construction, project use, and local design requirements; commercial installations generally need more robust drainage and cleaning provisions.
Do sauna walls need waterproofing?
The hot room needs a correct build-up for heat, moisture, and vapor. This commonly includes insulation and a continuous vapor-control layer behind the sauna cladding, while waterproofing requirements depend on the substrate and wet-area design, particularly at floors and junctions. We coordinate the appropriate build-up for the specific room rather than treating every sauna wall exactly like a shower wall.
Can a sauna have a large glass wall?
Yes. Glass can create a more open architectural relationship with the surrounding space, but it also increases heat loss. Heater sizing and the room's effective volume must account for the amount of glass and other uninsulated surfaces.
03 — Heaters
Heaters, Stones & Electrical
How is the correct heater size selected?
Heater selection is based on room volume, heat-loss surfaces such as glass or masonry, intended use, stone capacity, the löyly character you want and the electrical supply available on site. We also follow the selected manufacturer's room-volume and installation requirements. We work with Harvia, EOS and HUUM, and the make and model are chosen to suit the application and confirmed during technical design.
Do all sauna heaters require three-phase power?
No. Smaller heater models can often operate on single-phase supply, while higher-output heaters may require three-phase power. The exact requirement depends on the selected model and the project electrical design. The sauna heater should have the dedicated circuit, protection, cabling, and installation required by the manufacturer and the project electrical engineer.
Can I pour water on an electric sauna heater?
Yes, when the heater is designed for traditional Finnish sauna use and the correct sauna stones are installed. Water is poured onto the hot stones to create löyly. The heater manufacturer's operating instructions and water-quality requirements must always be followed.
Why do sauna stones matter?
Sauna stones store and release heat and provide the hot surface that turns water into löyly. Their type, quantity, condition, and how they are loaded into the heater affect airflow through the heater, heat stability, and the sauna experience. Stones should be heater-approved and selected for density, durability, and heat retention suited to the specific heater.
How long does a sauna take to heat up?
It varies. Room size and construction, heater output, stone mass, glazing, starting temperature, ventilation, and the type of heater all affect heat-up time. We size the heater for the room rather than promising one universal warm-up time.
04 — Materials
Materials & Lighting
What types of wood are suitable for sauna interiors?
We use sauna-suitable timbers including thermo woods, hinoki and other selected species, depending on where the material is used and the design of the room. Timber can also be combined with glass, stone, microcement and other architectural finishes where appropriate for the temperature and moisture zone. Selection is confirmed during design, along with construction and profiles.
Can I use ordinary interior wood inside a sauna?
Not every wood species, adhesive, coating, or finish is suitable. Materials inside the hot room must tolerate repeated heat and moisture cycles and remain comfortable to touch. We specify sauna-appropriate materials rather than treating the room like ordinary interior joinery.
What type of lighting do you recommend for a sauna?
We use sauna-specific lighting designed for high heat and humidity rather than ordinary architectural LEDs. Depending on the design, this can include concealed indirect LED lighting, fibre optics, bench lighting and heater or stone lighting. We work with Finnish specialist systems including Cariitti, with sauna products rated for demanding hot-room conditions. We generally favor warm, low-glare light around 2700K rather than brightly lighting the room.
Can different timber colors and finishes be combined?
Yes. Pale and thermally modified timbers, darker details, glass and stone can be combined to suit the architecture. Finish details are developed case by case, and every material used inside the hot room has to remain appropriate for sauna temperatures and moisture.
05 — Use
Sauna Use & Löyly
What is löyly?
Löyly is the heat and steam you feel when water is thrown onto hot sauna stones. In a well-designed sauna it feels enveloping rather than harsh. Its character depends on the heat available, the stones, the airflow, the room and how the water is applied.
What temperature should a Finnish sauna be?
There is no single required temperature. Finnish sauna is commonly enjoyed hot, but the experience is shaped just as much by löyly, airflow, humidity, and personal preference as by the thermometer. The goal is a comfortable bathing experience, not a temperature competition.
How long should a sauna session last?
There is no fixed duration. Sauna is normally taken in rounds, often with cooling and hydration in between. Users should leave the hot room when they feel uncomfortable rather than trying to meet a prescribed time.
Do you need to shower before using the sauna?
Yes. Showering before sauna use keeps the benches and room cleaner and is standard Finnish sauna practice.
06 — Installation
Installation & Commercial Projects
What does your scope include?
Depending on the project, our scope can include consultation, sauna design, technical planning, heater and specialist equipment supply, local fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning.
How long does a sauna project take?
Timing depends on design complexity, room readiness, equipment lead times, fabrication requirements, coordination with other trades, and project location. We establish the program after reviewing the room and project scope.
Can you supply only the heater or equipment?
Our focus is complete, properly coordinated sauna environments. Equipment-only requirements can be considered case by case, but we prefer to understand the room and technical conditions before recommending a heater, control system, or other specialist equipment.
Can you design saunas for hotels, spas, gyms, and wellness facilities?
Yes. Commercial saunas require additional attention to capacity, operating hours, durability, service access, controls, cleaning, ventilation, drainage, and coordination with the project's electrical and mechanical systems.
Do you commission the sauna after installation?
Yes, where commissioning is part of our scope. We check the installed equipment and controls, run the sauna up to temperature and confirm it operates correctly before handover.
